Volunteer Story

Meet Carmen C.

Carmen has been volunteering at Ronald McDonald House since 2023, after seeing the struggles that some of her family members went through during their time in the hospital.

Baking Volunteer, Sundays Since 2023

For Carmen, our Sunday volunteer baker, volunteering means so much more than just following recipes: “It’s about being part of something much more than myself. I can see that sometimes a warm plate of muffins, or homemade cookies, or blueberry bagels, can really brighten up someone’s day.”

Carmen has been volunteering at Ronald McDonald House since 2023, after seeing the struggles that some of her family members went through during their time in the hospital. After this personal experience, she knew she wanted to provide care and support for families and kids going through medical journeys.

In addition to her regular baking shifts, a highlight of her volunteer role has been accompanying families on out-trips to local attractions like Science World, the pumpkin patch, and the Vancouver Aquarium. “To see the families have opportunities to be outside of the hospital, create memories with their kids, and have moments of joy during their healing journeys makes my volunteer experience even more rewarding,” she says.

Her message to the community? “What I want people to know about the House is that it’s not just a house – it’s a home away from home for families who need support during difficult times. With the amazing programs and activities that go on every single day here, I would encourage you all to check out the website, learn more about the House and sign up for volunteering!”
